Flávio Bolsonaro leads Lula into an October 25 runoff in Brazil
Brazil's presidential election will go to an October 25 runoff between Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the official count showed Sunday.
The first round settled nothing.
At 9:15 p.m. Brasília time, 494,547 of 499,248 sections had been counted. Bolsonaro had 55,780,853 votes, or 47.20 percent. Lula had 53,125,135 votes, or 44.96 percent.
The count was still incomplete.
Brazilian election rules require an absolute majority of valid votes for a first-round presidential win. When nobody clears that mark, the two leading candidates advance.
The 2026 election schedule sets the second round for October 25.
