What police say happened
Police say officers went to the 600 block of NE 15th Place after several disturbance calls reporting a man with a gun and knife. The department says Colon broke down a door and later pointed what officers perceived as a firearm at them. Officers fired and Colon underwent surgery, according to the original police account.
The weapon description is a material update. Police initially described the object only as a firearm perceived by officers. The department now says the recovered object was an Airsoft pistol powered by CO2.
Colon's family responds
WINK reports that Colon's mother said she believed police knew he had a BB gun and was upset about the shooting. The family declined an on-camera interview while grieving.
