Cape Coral police say two officers shot and wounded a man near NE 15th Place after responding to a disturbance call Wednesday. The man was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital for surgery, no law enforcement personnel were injured, and the two officers were placed on administrative leave under department procedure.

The Cape Coral Police Department's official release says officers responded to a residence in the 1400 block of NE 10th Terrace at about 4:45 p.m.
Police say the man left the residence on foot. Cape Coral officers and Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies then searched near NE 15th Place and NE 9th Terrace.
The department alleges the man emerged near a dumpster enclosure with a handgun and pointed it at officers and deputies. Police say two Cape Coral officers discharged their service weapons and struck him. No independent account of the encounter has been released.
Officers detained the man and provided emergency medical care until Lee County EMS arrived, according to the department. He was taken to Gulf Coast Hospital for surgery. Police reported no injuries to law enforcement personnel.
The two officers were placed on administrative leave, which the department describes as standard procedure for an incident of this nature. The department has not named the officers.
The updated Gulf Coast News report described caution tape and a continuing law enforcement presence in the area, but neither that report nor the official release announced a road closure, evacuation or other instruction for residents.
The shooting, detention and hospital transport were over when the official account was published. The investigation continues, and police say further updates will be released.
