Euro area annual inflation rose to an estimated 3.3 percent in August from 2.9 percent in July, Eurostat reported Tuesday. Energy inflation increased to 14.3 percent from 10.3 percent.

The rest did not move together. Inflation excluding energy held at 2.2 percent. Services slowed to 3.0 percent from 3.3 percent, while food, alcohol and tobacco stayed at 1.2 percent.

Non-energy industrial goods went the other way, rising to 1.2 percent from 0.9 percent. The all-items index increased an estimated 0.4 percent during August.

The estimate is preliminary

The annual headline rate is now 1.3 percentage points above the European Central Bank's 2 percent target. That comparison does not establish what the bank will do next, and the release makes no forecast.

Eurostat labels the August figures as estimates. The fuller reading is scheduled for September 17.
