Lagarde says tighter financing will curb growth and energy-price spillovers
Higher long-term interest rates will restrain euro area growth and the spread of energy costs more than September forecasts assumed, ECB President Christine Lagarde said in her October 17 IMFC statement.
She still supports a measured policy response. Lagarde said energy-price increases had not spread to other prices and wages significantly beyond the effects already included in the ECB projections.
September inflation reached 3.8 percent, with the measure excluding food and energy at 2.5 percent. Wages had shown no material response to the energy shock, she said.
Lagarde expects energy costs to keep inflation well above target into the first half of 2027. The statement follows quarter-point rate increases in June and September and announces no new rate decision.
