US records $199.8bn net capital inflow in August
$199.8bn flowed into the United States on a net basis through the Treasury International Capital system in August, the Treasury reported October 16. Private inflows accounted for $178.5bn and official inflows for $21.3bn.
The components moved in different directions. Foreign investors bought a net $300.7bn of long-term US securities, while their holdings of Treasury bills fell $47.8bn. US residents bought a net $21.6bn of long-term foreign securities.
The total also includes banking flows and other short-term positions, so long-term securities purchases alone do not describe it. These monthly figures exclude direct investment and are not seasonally adjusted. September data are scheduled for November 18.
