More than 50,000 taxpayers are covered by automatic adoption-credit refunds that began in late September, the IRS said in an October 16 announcement.

The change applies only to 2025. Unused adoption credits originating in 2020 through 2024 can increase the refundable portion for that tax year, subject to a $5,000 limit per qualifying child and the other credit requirements.

The agency expects most eligible refunds by year-end. Returns filed under extension and accounts with unresolved problems will be reviewed later in 2026 after processing or resolution.

Eligible accounts generally receive the adjustment automatically. The IRS FAQ says the result can be a smaller refund, a reduced balance or no refund, including where amounts are applied to outstanding debts.
