Mariner High School's head football coach is on administrative leave while the Lee County district investigates what it calls a team building incident

The School District of Lee County has opened an investigation at Mariner High School in Cape Coral and placed the school's head football coach on administrative leave while it runs.

District spokesperson Rob Spicker confirmed to WINK News that the head coach has been suspended in relation to what the district described as a team building incident, and that a statement posted by Lee County School Board chair Armor Persons about the matter is accurate.

In that statement, Persons said he had been briefed that the district "immediately initiated an investigation and placed the coach on administrative leave while that investigation is underway." He called that step "the appropriate first step to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure due process."

Persons was careful to mark the limits of his own role. He said the school board does not conduct personnel investigations or direct operational decisions, and that those responsibilities rest with the superintendent and district administration. The board's part, by his account, is oversight: ensuring district policies are followed and that appropriate action is taken on the facts.

He declined to say where he expected the investigation to land. Persons said he would not speculate on the outcome before it is complete, but said that if district policies were violated or students were placed at risk, he expects "appropriate accountability and corrective action." In a follow up comment he said there will be "a thorough investigation and appropriate action will be taken," adding that he could not go further because employee terminations have to be voted on by the board.

Speaking to Gulf Coast News, whose reporter Layza Pinero Resto also confirmed the investigation with Persons on Sunday, the chair gave the same reason for his reticence in blunter terms, saying the board could not comment because it may eventually have to hold a termination hearing if that is warranted. Persons told that outlet the investigation stems from an overnight event at the school involving a coach and football players.

Asked whether the matter would come up at Monday's school board meeting, Persons said it is not on the agenda because it is being investigated, though he expects it could be raised during the public comment period.
