The National Transportation Safety Board says inadequate fuel planning caused the April forced landing near Marco Island Executive Airport.

The finding appears in the agency's final report for case ERA26LA171, published October 8. WINK News reported the finding Friday.

The Cessna 150H left Lake City on April 12 with one pilot aboard. The report says the flight took longer and used more fuel than planned after multiple changes in altitude and course.

The pilot reported that the engine sputtered and then lost all power after about three hours and 10 minutes. The airplane made a forced landing on a road near Marco Island Executive Airport and sustained substantial damage. The pilot was not injured.

Investigators found the left fuel tank empty and about one-quarter gallon more than the unusable quantity in the right tank. The tanks were intact, and investigators found no evidence of fuel leakage.

The NTSB listed the probable cause as the pilot's inadequate fuel planning, which resulted in fuel exhaustion and a total loss of engine power.
