Three Lee County beach parking sites will close September 8 while the beaches remain open for Hurricane Ian restoration work

In short

Lee County will close parking September 8 at Bowditch Point Regional Park, Little Hickory Island Beach Park and Bonita Beach Park for Hurricane Ian restoration work. The beaches will remain open to pedestrians. Bonita Beach Access 1 will remain open until November, and the county lists transit alternatives for both beach areas.

Three Lee County beach parking sites will close Tuesday, September 8, while the beaches stay open to pedestrians. Tyler Watkins at Gulf Coast News reported the schedule after Lee County Government issued a public notice Wednesday.

Bowditch Point Regional Park on Fort Myers Beach will have no parking during the work. Pedestrians can continue reaching the beach along the south side of the park property.

In Bonita Springs, the parking lots at Little Hickory Island Beach Park and Bonita Beach Park will close. Portable restrooms at Little Hickory will move outside the construction fence, and beach access at Bonita Beach Park will shift to nearby Bonita Beach Access 1.

Bonita Beach Access 1 will remain open until November, when its parking lot is scheduled to close for a separate phase of restoration.

The projects cover facilities damaged by Hurricane Ian, including restrooms, boardwalks, parking areas and other park amenities. Lee County says most of the work is expected to take 11 months.

For Fort Myers Beach, the county points visitors to the free Beach Park and Ride lot on Summerlin Square Drive and LeeTran beach routes. For the Bonita area, LeeTran's Ultra On Demand service connects central Bonita Springs with Bonita Beach Park.
