Cape Coral approves up to $500,000 to stabilize a sinking section of Northwest 16th Terrace
Cape Coral approved an emergency purchase of up to $500,000 for immediate work on an approximately 80 foot wide roadway depression in front of 1521 Northwest 16th Terrace. City documents call for compaction grouting at 12 injection locations after an engineering review found that the road was continuing to subside.

Cape Coral City Council approved up to $500,000 for emergency repair of a sinking section of Northwest 16th Terrace Wednesday, Gulf Coast News reporter Jackie Guenther reported.
The city agenda and supporting documents identify the problem as an approximately 80 foot wide roadway depression in front of 1521 Northwest 16th Terrace. The money will come from the 6 Cent Gas Tax Fund.
An engineering review by ECS Florida found that the roadway was continuing to subside and found no indication that the movement had stopped. Public Works said immediate remediation was needed to protect the road and nearby public and private property.
The recommended repair is compaction grouting. The plan calls for injecting grout below the roadway at 12 locations to an average depth of approximately 40 feet, filling voids and stabilizing the ground beneath the pavement.
The authorization marks a new stage for a problem that the city had been investigating with subsurface borings. Money & World reported August 25 that the city had confirmed noticeable settlement but had not yet published an engineering result, cost or repair schedule.
City documents do not give a firm start or completion date for the stabilization work. The emergency authorization is capped at $500,000 and covers the immediate roadway repair.
