The caution the police department issued while the leak was live, that anyone in the area should not use heat or an open flame, went with the emergency and does not survive the all clear. It is worth being precise about what has and has not been said, because an all clear on a gas leak is a narrower statement than it sounds. The fire department has said the hazard is mitigated. Nobody has said when the rescission was issued, how long people were out in the end, whether anyone was hurt, whether any building was damaged, or when TECO finished any repair to the line the excavator hit. This site is not going to fill those in. The practical consequence for a resident or a business owner on those blocks is that the emergency is over rather than that every detail of it is now on the record. One thing does carry forward beyond this incident, and it is the reason a strike like this happens at all. The fire department's account is that an excavator hit a natural gas line during digging behind a business on the Terrace. It is free, it is the law in Florida for anyone who digs, and it is the whole of what stands between a routine job and the kind of morning two blocks of Cape Coral had. The standing advice for anyone who smells gas is unchanged by any of this: do not hunt for the source, do not touch electrical switches or anything that could spark, get out and well clear of the building, and call 911 and the gas utility from somewhere else.

The gas leak that prompted evacuations along two blocks of southeast Cape Coral on Monday morning has been resolved.

Gulf Coast News, updating its story on the incident on Monday afternoon, reported that the Cape Coral Fire Department said the hazard had been mitigated and that the evacuations had been rescinded.

The leak began when an excavator struck a natural gas line behind Merrick Seafood on Southeast 47th Terrace, according to the fire department's account as relayed by the outlet. Firefighters and TECO both responded.

The Cape Coral Police Department had asked buildings on the south side of the 1200 to 1300 block of Southeast 47th Street and on the north side of the 1200 to 1300 block of Southeast 47th Terrace to leave the area as a precaution, and told anyone still in the area to keep heat and open flame away from it. That request is the one now lifted.

This site reported the evacuation on Monday morning, and noted at the time that no all clear had been published and that neither department had issued a statement that the line had been capped or the evacuation request lifted. That is what has now changed.

Nothing published by either department in its own words could be read on this run. The City of Cape Coral home page carries no notice of the incident or its resolution, and the city paths for police department and city news both return errors, which is consistent with both departments issuing this kind of update through social channels rather than through a page. WINK News, which carried the original police department account, has published no follow-up that could be found. The all clear therefore rests on one outlet relaying the fire department, and it is reported here on that basis.

No source has stated whether anyone was hurt, whether any building was damaged, whether gas entered any structure, when the rescission was issued, or when any repair to the line was completed.
