Super Micro Computer has told investors that its first fiscal quarter ran far ahead of plan, two weeks before it reports. In a preliminary update filed with the SEC on October 20, the San Jose server maker estimated revenue for the three months to September 30 at $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion. Its guidance had been $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion.

The company attributed the gap primarily to increased demand for AI platforms. It put gross margin at 12.0 to 12.5 percent, against guidance of 10.4 to 10.8 percent, and credited customer and product mix for the difference.

The numbers are estimates. They are unaudited, management says they may be revised as the books close, and the release states that the company's independent auditor has performed no procedures on them at all. Full results and an earnings call are scheduled for November 3 at 5 p.m. Eastern.
