Twenty-nine point four million contracts. That was CME Group's average daily volume in the third quarter, the highest it has recorded for a third quarter, according to its results filed with the SEC on Wednesday. Of that, 9 million traded outside the United States. The group runs the Chicago Board of Trade alongside its other exchanges.

Revenue rose 13 percent to $1,737.3m from $1,537.6m a year earlier. Net income was $1,036.9m, or $2.89 a diluted share, against $908.0m and $2.49. On an adjusted basis the company earned $3.02 a share, up from $2.68.

Clearing and transaction fees brought in $1,378.1m at an average rate of $0.679 per contract. Market data revenue climbed 20 percent to a record $243.1m. Chairman and Chief Executive Terry Duffy said volume grew by double digits in all six of the exchange's asset classes and called it the second highest quarter in the company's history for revenue and adjusted net income.
