New Jersey approves higher water rates and a $9.88 monthly PFAS credit

September 15 is the hinge.

New Jersey regulators approved a $68m annualized revenue increase for New Jersey American Water, the company said in an SEC filing. New water and wastewater rates take effect that day.

The company says an average residential water customer using about 5,700 gallons a month will pay approximately $4 more. Wastewater customers face an average increase of about $4, while customers receiving both services face nearly $8.

Eligible water customers will also receive a separate $9.88 monthly credit for 12 months beginning in September. The credit returns more than $79m of PFAS litigation proceeds and interest. The company says it more than offsets the average water increase during that year.

Actual bill changes vary by usage, service type and service area.
