Hormel Foods Corporation

Hormel has hired the finance chief of Tyson's chicken business, and the cash it is paying him to cover what he forfeits by leaving is exactly one year of his new salary

Ash Bhumbla ran the finances of Tyson's chicken business from September 2023 until this month. From 8 September he is executive vice president and chief financial officer of Hormel Foods.

Hormel disclosed the appointment in an 8-K accepted at 16:52 on Monday. Paul Kuehneman, who has been holding the job on an interim basis, keeps his own: he stays vice president and controller and remains the principal accounting officer.

The filing does not say why the seat was open.

The package

Base salary is $700,000, with an annual bonus targeted at 100 percent of that and prorated for the part of the current fiscal year he works. The long-term incentive target is $2.1m a year, delivered in thirds under the present programme: performance-based cash, stock options, and time-vested restricted stock, with the first grants expected in December 2026. He also joins each of the performance cash cycles already running, on a prorated basis.

To cover what he forfeits by leaving, Hormel is paying a one-time cash award of $700,000 and granting restricted stock worth $1.2m at the date of grant.

The cash comes back if he goes. Leave voluntarily inside three years and he repays it, prorated for the full years remaining. The stock vests half at the first anniversary and a quarter at each of the next two. Relocation carries a $10,000 cash bonus, repayable if he leaves inside 18 months.

The sign-on cash and the first year of salary are the same number.

The clause worth reading

Point six of the offer letter is not a standard benefits line.

Hormel has written him a guarantee against its own severance plan being cut. If the company eliminates the Executive Severance Plan, or changes it in a way that reduces what he would get under it, and then terminates him without cause, he receives a lump sum of one year's base salary plus his bonus target as it stood at termination. He is otherwise an at-will employee with no fixed term.

The rest of the record

Bhumbla is 39. He was concurrently chief financial officer of Tyson's international segment from March 2025 to December 2025. Before Tyson he was at Perdue Farms from September 2019 to August 2023, latterly as senior vice president for finance and corporate development. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Wharton.

The offer letter itself is not attached. Hormel says it expects to file it with the annual report for the fiscal year ending 25 October 2026, which means the full terms reach the public record some months after the man does.
