The Florida Highway Patrol now records the roadway as clear at Palm Beach Boulevard and Broadway Street in Alva, on the crash with injuries it logged there at 6.27 this morning.

The call is still on the state's dispatch board. What has changed is the Patrol's own status note against it, which now reads, in the state's words, that the roadway is clear.

The sequence

The Patrol logged the crash at 6.27 a.m. and its note then read roadblock on Palm Beach Boulevard.

At 6.47 the note changed to say the right lane was blocked because of the crash, which is a full closure easing to a single lane. This desk reported that at 6.52.

By the time the board was read again at 8.34 the note read that the roadway is clear. The board does not stamp that change, and the third timestamp against the call still reads 6.47.46, so the moment the road went clear is not on the record. What can be fixed is the window. The note still read right lane blocked when the board was read at 6.50, and it read clear at 8.34.

So the road reopened between 6.50 and 8.34 this morning, and no closer time than that is claimed here.

Why this counts as a reopening and a vanished row would not

The earlier item on this crash made a point of saying that when the row came off the board, that would be the state ending publication of the call and not the state announcing the junction had reopened.

That still holds. This dispatch board carries no clearance column of any kind, which was checked again on both of this morning's readings by searching the whole page for the word and finding it nowhere.

But the row has not come off the board. It is still there, and the Patrol has written the roadway's status into it directly. That is an affirmative statement in the field the state uses for the state of the road, rather than an inference from an absence, and it is the whole basis for reporting the corridor open.

What the state still has not said

The board types the incident as a crash with injuries. It does not type it as a fatality.

Beyond the type, the location and the status note, the Patrol has published nothing: not the number of vehicles, not the number or severity of the injuries, not whether anyone was taken to hospital, and not a cause. No agency has issued a release and no local newsroom is carrying the crash at the time of writing.

A road being clear is a fact about the road. It is not a fact about anyone who was hurt on it.

Why the location made a short closure bite

Palm Beach Boulevard carries State Road 80, the main road east out of Fort Myers through Olga and Alva toward LaBelle. At Alva it has no close parallel route.

A blocked junction in the city pushes traffic onto the next street over. Out here the alternatives are long county roads well to the north or south, so a driver already committed to the corridor when it shut had few good options. The closure also landed at the front of the morning peak, on a road that carries commuters into Fort Myers from the eastern edge of Lee County and from Hendry County beyond it.

That geography is why this desk covers calls on this stretch that would not be worth writing up in town, and it does not change when the road opens again.
