The weather service marks a product EXT when it extends an event it has already opened, and Thursday afternoon's transmission is an extension of event 0017, the same rip current statement this site reported on July 28 and again on Thursday morning. Nothing about the hazard, the zones or the wording changed. The end time did. Readers who saw either of the two earlier items were told, correctly at the time, that the statement ran until 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31. It now runs until 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, and this item exists mainly so that the earlier number does not stand as the last thing this site said on it. The practical effect is that the hazard now covers a Saturday rather than expiring on the Friday evening before one. That is the difference between a warning that lapses as the weekend starts and a warning that sits on top of the busiest beach day of the week, at Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Bonita Beach and Lovers Key. The service's own description of the impact has not softened across any of the three transmissions: rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Two boundaries carry over from the earlier reporting and are worth restating rather than assuming. Collier County is still not in this product. Naples, Marco Island and Vanderbilt Beach fall under the Miami forecast office, and the Collier rip current statement that lapsed on Wednesday evening has not been reissued, which is a statement about what the forecasters expect and not a verdict on any particular stretch of water. And a rip current statement remains the mildest of the surf products the service issues, one step below a High Surf Advisory. It describes a hazard that is forecast rather than one that is being observed, which is why this item carries no breaking flag even though the statement is in force as it publishes. It is a reason to look at the flag at the beach entrance on Saturday, not a reason to skip the beach.

The National Weather Service has extended the rip current statement covering Lee County's Gulf beaches by one day. It now runs until 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 1.

The extension was transmitted by the service's Tampa Bay Ruskin office at 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, July 30. It is marked as an update rather than a new product, and it carries the extension code against event 0017, which is the same event that has been in force since Wednesday morning.

Until Thursday afternoon the statement was due to end at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31. That was the end time reported by this site on July 28, when the statement was first issued, and again at 5:15 a.m. on Thursday. The forecast office has now pushed it out by twenty four hours, and the product's own summary of the timing reads simply: through Saturday evening.

Six zones are covered, unchanged from the original issuance: Pinellas, Coastal Hillsborough, Coastal Manatee, Coastal Sarasota, Coastal Charlotte and Coastal Lee. In Lee County the affected shoreline is the Gulf front, which takes in Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, Bonita Beach and Lovers Key. Inland Lee is not part of the product.

The service continues to rate the event moderate in severity, likely in certainty and expected in urgency, the standard classifications for a hazard that is forecast rather than already observed.

Its statement of the risk is unchanged and is one sentence long. Rip currents, the service writes, can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

The instruction is also unchanged. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Collier County is not covered. Collier falls under the National Weather Service office in Miami rather than Tampa Bay Ruskin. The rip current statement Miami issued for Coastal Collier early on Wednesday ended at 8 p.m. that evening and has not been reissued.
