Deputies say a maintenance worker at a Fort Myers Beach resort signed out the master key that opens the guest room safes, and three sets of guests then reported cash, pills and a wedding ring gone from theirs

A maintenance worker at a Fort Myers Beach resort has been arrested and charged with three counts of grand theft after guests reported cash, prescription medication and a wedding ring missing from their room safes.

Gulf Coast News reports the account below from the Lee County Sheriff's Office arrest report. The accused is named there as Evan Liang, 23, of Cape Coral, and he was arrested on Monday.

Deputies were called to Pointe Estero Beach Resort at about 5.19 p.m. for a reported burglary, according to the report.

The first two victims told deputies they had walked down to the lobby to print boarding passes, and saw a maintenance worker come out of the elevator as they went. When they got back to their room, the report says, they found him inside it. He told them he was performing emergency maintenance and checking the room safes, and he was holding a silver master key capable of opening them.

He left, the report says, then came back a short time later and told them again that he needed to check the safe. One of the guests became suspicious at that point and opened the safe himself. A wedding ring, and cash out of his wallet, were gone from it. When the guests said they were going to call law enforcement, the report says, he left the room immediately.

Deputies who arrived and canvassed the property say they found him leaving the building carrying a gray keypad with wiring attached to it. They stopped and searched him, and say they recovered cash and the master safe key. The amount of cash on him matched the amount the guest had reported missing.

While deputies were still speaking with him, according to the report, two more guests came forward to say things were missing from their room as well: cash, about ninety oxycodone pills, a prescription bottle, and zolpidem tablets.

Deputies did not find the wedding ring, and did not find the medication.

The report also records how the key came to be in his hands. Deputies interviewed a maintenance supervisor at the resort, who told them the worker had asked for the master key after saying a guest could not open their safe. He was shown where the key was kept, the supervisor said, and told to bring it back immediately after using it.

He was arrested and faces three charges of grand theft.
