Fire tore through Buckingham Presbyterian Church on Friday night, and the crews who got there first found it already burning through the roof.

WINK News reported the fire at 4241 Buckingham Road, in the Tice Fire District, at around 10.25 p.m. It went to a second alarm. Firefighters from the Lehigh Acres Fire District came in to work alongside Tice crews, and the fire stayed active for some time while they fought it.

By Sunday the congregation was worshipping outside. Gulf Coast News, which named the church and covered the service, reported that members gathered outdoors after the fire destroyed the building late on Friday night.

The cause is not known

No cause has been determined. WINK reported that the Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosion Investigations will likely take the investigation on, and the reason its source gave is the nature of the building rather than anything about the fire itself: a church draws that referral as a matter of routine.

It is worth being blunt about what that does and does not mean, because the name of that bureau invites a reading it does not support. Investigators being assigned is not a finding, not a suspicion, and not a statement that anybody did anything.

What has not been published

Neither fire district has published an incident report. There is no cause determination, no account of how the fire started and no assessment of what the building and its contents were worth. The word destroyed is the reporting outlet's, drawn from what its people saw at the scene, and no fire authority document putting a figure or a formal extent on the loss could be found.

Until one of those appears, what is established is narrow: a second-alarm fire on Friday night, two districts on it, flames through the roof on arrival, and a congregation that met outdoors on Sunday.
