Yara opens Sluiskil carbon capture plant designed for 800,000 tonnes a year

Operations have begun.

Yara's carbon capture facility at Sluiskil in the Netherlands can capture and liquefy up to 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year from ammonia production after opening Monday, the European Commission said.

Northern Lights vessels will ship the liquid carbon dioxide to Øygarden, Norway. The company says it will be injected 2,600 metres below the seabed for permanent storage.

Yara expects the project to capture and store about 12m tonnes over 15 years, subject to what it calls the right framework conditions. The Commission describes the plant as Europe's largest commercial carbon capture and storage project. Yara says it is the first complete cross-border chain of its kind at industrial scale.
