US and China open AI dialogue, with incident notifications proposed
Nayan Seth of the South China Morning Post reported that US and Chinese officials put a bilateral AI dialogue into operation after eight hours of talks in New York on Sunday. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer also said the countries had moved forward with a Board of Trade.
Washington's proposal is narrower. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States wants a notification mechanism for AI incidents that reach a national security threshold. The Chinese delegation did not address reporters.
Xinhua's readout confirmed that the delegations discussed AI, trade and investment. It did not mention the notification proposal. Greer said teams were still choosing goods they consider non-sensitive for the trade body. Export controls were not discussed. Treasury and USTR had not posted written US readouts.
