UK caps vet prescription fees at £21.40 and orders price lists

Britain's competition regulator has capped the fee veterinary practices can charge for a primary prescription at £21.40, under an order published Tuesday.

The cap starts March 23, 2027 for groups with 15 or more first-opinion practices or out-of-hours centres, and September 23 for smaller businesses. A second medicine on the same prescription is capped at £12.70.

The order goes further. Large groups must publish standard price lists by December 23, while smaller practices have until March 23. Prices must include VAT and show typical charges for consultations, vaccines, surgery, diagnostics and end-of-life care.
