Swiss voters reject stricter neutrality and food initiatives, both by more than 70 percent

Swiss voters rejected two constitutional initiatives Sunday, leaving the government's current neutrality policy and food rules in place.

The federal result shows the neutrality initiative losing by 70.2 percent to 29.8 percent. It failed in every canton. The proposal would have required perpetual armed neutrality, restricted cooperation with military alliances and barred most sanctions against countries at war unless the United Nations imposed them.

The margin was wider on food.

The food initiative received 27.5 percent support and 72.5 percent opposition. It sought constitutional goals for sustainable domestic production, more plant-based food and clean drinking water.

Both results are provisional, with counting complete. Turnout was about 47 percent on each question.
