Sweden's preliminary election count leaves government formation unsettled

In short

The official election night projection puts the four parties aligned with the incumbent government three seats behind the other four parties winning seats. The result is preliminary.

Sweden's live preliminary count put the four parties aligned with the incumbent government on 173 seats and the other four parties winning seats on 176, after 6,156 of 6,626 districts had reported.

It is not final.

The Swedish Election Authority's snapshot gave the Social Democrats 100 seats, Moderates 70 and Sweden Democrats 62. The remaining five parties were assigned between 19 and 29 seats each.

The authority says municipalities conduct the election night count, with late advance ballots counted on Wednesday. Final counting begins Monday and a national result is expected about one week after election day. The three seat gap therefore does not settle who can form a government.
