NHTSA opens an audit of Tesla's Cybercab certification after the Austin launch

NHTSA opened an audit of Tesla's Cybercab certification after the company began commercial service with a small number of the vehicles in Austin on Thursday.

The vehicle has no permanently attached steering wheel, brake pedal, accelerator pedal or mirrors. Tesla told the agency that it had certified the Cybercab as compliant with every applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

That certification is now the subject of audit AQ26002. NHTSA says it will examine the process and technical data Tesla used, including whether the company treated some standards as inapplicable to the vehicle.

This is an inquiry, not a finding. The agency's record does not say that a Cybercab has failed a standard, and it gives no vehicle count beyond describing the Austin deployment as small.
