Fire and explosion deaths in workplace accidents investigated by South Korea's labor ministry reached 32 through the second quarter, up from 16 a year earlier. The ministry said Sunday that inspectors will check workplaces with fire and explosion risks from November 2 to 13.
The inspection period follows employer self-checks from October 19 to 30. Inspectors will examine measures including control of sparks, gas monitoring and ventilation, as well as firefighting equipment and escape routes. Unannounced visits are also planned.
The ministry says the heads of its 49 regional offices will visit sites, while the occupational safety agency checks risks during patrols and technical guidance. Violations can bring fines and corrective measures; failure to comply with corrective orders can lead to legal action.
