Japan's September trade deficit nearly doubled to ¥536.6bn as import prices climbed 20.8 percent
Japan's goods trade deficit widened to ¥536.6bn in September from ¥277.7bn a year earlier, according to provisional Finance Ministry figures released Wednesday morning in Tokyo. Exports rose 16.7 percent to ¥10.972tn and imports rose 18.9 percent to ¥11.509tn.
Volumes barely moved. Export quantum rose 1.9 percent while export unit values climbed 14.5 percent, and on the import side quantum fell 1.6 percent as unit values rose 20.8 percent.
Fuel shows the gap most clearly. Petroleum imports rose 51.1 percent in value on a 3.1 percent rise in quantity, and the LNG bill rose 39.2 percent even though the tonnage fell 7.3 percent.
Shipments to the United States were the exception on volume. Exports there rose 22.9 percent to ¥1.963tn with quantum up 11.8 percent, while exports to China rose 8.6 percent in value as their volume fell 6.8 percent.
