India orders caller-ID apps to send spam reports to telecom carriers
India's telecom regulator has made spam reporting inside caller-ID and phone-dialer apps conditional on sending each report to the telecom carriers' DLT platform.
It takes effect in 30 days.
The Third Amendment Regulations also bar call-management apps from blanket blocking or tagging calls from number ranges designated for commercial and government communications. A user may still set personal preferences, but those settings cannot alter another user's experience.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said the rule is meant to close a gap between reports collected by apps and complaints available for regulatory action. The final text allows the authority to act under applicable laws against an app that does not comply, after giving it a chance to respond.
