Trump signs Russia sanctions law with tariffs up to 500 percent

President Donald Trump signed H.R. 5334 on Friday, enacting a broad package of sanctions and tariff authorities aimed at Russia and countries that sustain its energy trade.

The first deadline is 30 days.

The enrolled bill directs the President to increase duties on Russian goods to a rate of up to 500 percent. It also requires new reviews and sanctions involving Russian officials, state banks, vessels and qualifying foreign financial institutions.

The law permits tariffs from zero to 100 percent on all goods from certain countries that knowingly make new purchases of Russian oil or gas, or that rank among the leading facilitators of Russian oil sanctions evasion. The measure includes humanitarian, nuclear, transit, licensing and wind down exceptions.

Most of the new provisions end five years after enactment. A separate section extends the Iran Sanctions Act through 2031.
