FAA orders 15 A380 engine seals replaced after an uncontained failure
The FAA ordered replacement of 15 high-pressure turbine interstage seals after an Airbus A380 aborted takeoff following an uncontained failure, according to a final rule filed Tuesday.
None is on a US-registered airplane.
The directive covers specified seals in Engine Alliance GP7270, GP7272 and GP7277 engines. The first group must be removed within 50 flight cycles or 30 days after the rule takes effect. The other groups get 100 cycles or 60 days, and 150 cycles or 90 days.
The FAA estimates labor and parts at $528,150 per engine. It says the failure could cause an engine fire and airplane damage. The root cause remains under investigation.
