ESMA makes AI and tokenisation a supervisory priority from 2027

The European Securities and Markets Authority will make digital innovation a coordinated supervisory priority from 2027, the regulator announced. Its initial focus will be how regulated firms use artificial intelligence and tokenisation.

The priority will guide cooperation among national regulators and ESMA. The agency said the work is intended to build expertise, capacity and more consistent supervision across the European Union, without creating a new substantive rule or compliance deadline. No new rule follows.

Digital innovation will sit alongside a cyber and operational resilience priority that began in 2025. ESMA is concluding a separate priority on environmental, social and governance disclosures that started in 2023.
