A presidential memorandum directs the Office of Management and Budget and the US trade representative to identify Canadian-origin goods that can legally be removed or made unavailable for federal civilian purchasing.

The memorandum, filed Friday at 11:15 a.m. Eastern, says Canadian suppliers have access to more than $280bn annually in covered US federal procurement. It cites Canadian federal preferences and provincial restrictions as the reason for the review.

No blanket ban took effect. Agencies must identify domestic alternatives where law permits, while the trade representative monitors Canadian policy and may recommend restoring an item's availability.
