Canada commits more than C$4.7bn to 313 VIA Rail passenger cars from Alstom

Canada will invest more than C$4.7bn for VIA Rail to acquire and maintain 313 passenger cars from Alstom Canada, the government announced Thursday.

The work stays in Canada.

The cars will be manufactured and assembled in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and La Pocatiere, Quebec. Design and engineering will take place in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec. The government estimates that the work will support nearly 700 jobs.

The fleet will include dining, panorama and sleeper cars. It will serve eight long-distance, regional and remote routes outside the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, across eight provinces.

The C$4.7bn covers both acquisition and maintenance. It is not a purchase price for the cars alone.

Canada separately committed C$1.6bn for 45 Stadler locomotives and C$357m for a Montreal assembly and maintenance facility. Together, the government puts the fleet-renewal commitment above C$6.6bn.
