A Thursday afternoon storm blew construction barrels off the State Road 82 widening job near Corkscrew Road, and many of them were still lying off the road overnight.
Gulf Coast News reports that a viewer flagged the damage, which included dozens of traffic drums blown into a roadside ditch. The drums line the road widening project along that stretch, and their displacement left a gap between the open lanes and the construction site.
When the outlet visited hours after the storm, a worker was putting the barrels back into place one at a time. Many others remained scattered near the treeline.
A driver who spoke to the outlet off camera said the storm blew the barrels into their path. Gulf Coast News chief meteorologist Allyson Rae attributed the damage to strong wind gusts, putting them at 40 to 50 miles per hour and noting that the blinding rainfall in a storm of that kind is itself dangerous on the roads.
That wind figure is her assessment rather than a reading, and no official instrument sits on that stretch to check it against. The automated station at Immokalee returned no observations at all for Thursday afternoon. Of the three nearest stations that did report, Naples peaked at about 24 miles per hour, and Southwest Florida International and Page Field at about 20 each. A summer downburst can hit one mile of road far harder than a gauge 25 miles away ever registers, so the lower readings neither confirm nor contradict what crossed that work zone.
Corkscrew Road meets State Road 82 in Collier County, northwest of Immokalee. That junction was checked against road geometry and a federal county lookup rather than taken from the coverage, and the state road is tagged as under construction at that point in the same mapping data, which matches the widening project described.
Gulf Coast News says it has contacted the Florida Department of Transportation to find out when the remaining debris will be cleared. No answer has been published, so there is no clearance time here.
No public document sits behind this account. The department has issued no statement and no advisory about this stretch, and debris on a shoulder that has not closed a lane does not generate a dispatch record, so what is known about it reached the public through one newsroom and a viewer who flagged it.
The weather has since cleared. Naples and Southwest Florida International both reported clear skies early Friday, and the National Weather Service has no watch, warning or advisory in effect for Collier or Lee County. The Florida Highway Patrol dispatch board, read early Friday, holds three Lee and Collier entries, all routine construction elsewhere and none on State Road 82.
