State Road 82 is open again at Corkscrew Road, and the Highway Patrol has now said the man who died there was 75 and from Lehigh Acres

State Road 82 is open again at Corkscrew Road in Collier County, close to six hours after a crash the Florida Highway Patrol typed as a fatality shut it in both directions.

The state dispatch entry for the call is unchanged in its timestamps, still recording a 6.29 p.m. receipt on Monday, a dispatch at 6.33 and a trooper on scene at 6.56. Its remarks field, which read that both directions of State Road 82 were closed at County Road 850 through the evening, now reads that the roadway is clear. That wording changed between 12.14 a.m. and 12.19 a.m., which this desk fixes by its own five minute polling of the board rather than by any stamp the board prints.

The Highway Patrol has since released more about who died. WINK News reports, from the Highway Patrol, that the man who died was 75 and from Lehigh Acres, that he was driving a 2020 Nissan, and that he was attempting to turn left from Corkscrew Road onto westbound State Road 82 at about 6.30 p.m. A 2013 dump truck driven by a 60 year old Lehigh Acres man was traveling east on State Road 82. According to the Highway Patrol, the Nissan made the left turn in front of the approaching dump truck and the front of the truck collided with the side of the car.

The 75 year old was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and was later pronounced dead. The dump truck driver was not injured.

Gulf Coast News, which reported the death on Monday evening, has updated its own account to the same Highway Patrol detail.

The man who died has not been named by any agency. No charge has been filed and no citation has been reported. The Highway Patrol says the crash remains under investigation, and the sequence above is that agency's account rather than a settled finding.

WINK News reports separately that this crash is not connected to a fatal hit-and-run involving a bicyclist on State Road 29 south of State Road 82 the same day, on which the Highway Patrol is still looking for the driver.

One caution on the reopening. The state board publishes no clearance column of any kind, so what has changed here is the remarks text the Highway Patrol maintains on its own call, not an announcement by an agency that the road is open. A fatal crash scene can also carry cones or slow work after the lanes themselves are back.
