A man on a bicycle was found dead on the shoulder of State Road 29 south of State Road 82, and the Highway Patrol is still looking for the vehicle that hit him

The Florida Highway Patrol is looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a man riding a bicycle on State Road 29 in Immokalee, and has asked anyone who knows anything about it to come forward.

WINK News reports, from the Highway Patrol, that the man was discovered on the grass shoulder of State Road 29 south of State Road 82 at about 12.30 p.m. on Monday and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Highway Patrol, an unknown vehicle was traveling south on State Road 29 south of State Road 82 while the man rode south on the paved apron. The vehicle collided with him and left. Troopers say the vehicle is believed to have headlight damage.

The agency says the specific date and time of the collision remain under investigation, so the half past twelve stamp is when he was found rather than an established time of the crash.

The state dispatch board carried a matching Collier County fatality call that afternoon, received four minutes after that discovery time, at the State Road 29 junction with State Road 82, with the southbound lanes blocked. That call has since left the board and the lanes are open.

The man has not been identified publicly. No vehicle has been recovered, no driver has been identified, and nobody has been arrested or accused. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Highway Patrol or Crimestoppers.

WINK News also spoke to Terrence McLaughlin of the Calusa Riders Bicycle Club, who told the station that most roads in the area have no dedicated bike lanes or multi-use paths, leaving cyclists and drivers sharing the same surface.

This death is separate from the fatal crash on State Road 82 at Corkscrew Road the same evening. WINK News reports the Highway Patrol treats the two as unconnected.
