The fire shut down traffic in both directions on the causeway, WINK News reported, with the Lee County Sheriff's Office confirming that emergency responders were on scene. Westbound lanes were affected and traffic backed up while the vehicle was towed. All lanes have since reopened. Officials asked drivers to use caution and to consider delaying travel while the incident was being cleared.

The two reports do not agree on injuries. Gulf Coast News reports the fire district said there were none. WINK said it was unclear whether anyone was hurt. Both are stated here rather than one being chosen.

On the cause, Gulf Coast News attributes the lightning strike to the fire district, while WINK attributes it to passersby.
