Work has started on the Royal Palm Park fishing pier in Tice, Lee County has now put the closure in writing on its own page, and a dollar figure has appeared for the first time

The rebuild of the Royal Palm Park fishing pier in Tice is under way. Gulf Coast News reported on Monday evening that crews are working in the water and that cranes are installing new pilings, nearly four years after Hurricane Ian destroyed the pier on the Caloosahatchee River in 2022.

This desk reported the closure on Friday, before the work began, and recorded two things it could not then establish: any dollar figure for the project, and any corroboration from Lee County itself, whose website would not answer that day.

Both have since closed.

A figure, and what it does not mean

Gulf Coast News reports that the pier reconstruction forms part of a 3.8 million dollar multi-project initiative funded by Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster relief and the Florida Department of Emergency Management appropriations programme.

That figure is the newsroom's. No Lee County document read for this item states a cost for the work, and the 3.8 million is described as covering a set of projects rather than this pier alone, so it is not the price of the pier and should not be read as one.

The split between the federal and the state shares is still not stated, and neither is the contractor.

The county is now on the record

Lee County Parks and Recreation carries a standing advisory on its own page for the park. It says that starting Monday, August 24, construction work will begin to restore the fishing pier, that the park will remain closed for the duration of the project, and that the work is expected to be completed in November 2026, weather permitting.

On Friday every one of those facts reached the public through a television station. They now come from the county in its own words, and they agree.

One correction travels with that. The address is 300 Royal Palm Park Road in east Fort Myers, not Royal Palm Parkway, which is the form the earlier reporting used and which this desk repeated.

What is closed is the whole park

The county lists more at Royal Palm Park than the pier. The site sits on the Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail and carries a paddlecraft landing and launch, a pavilion, on-leash dog walking, ADA accessible facilities and free parking.

All of it goes for the duration, because the park itself is the staging ground. A resident who has been launching a kayak there, or walking a dog in the evening, needs somewhere else.

November is the work, not necessarily the gates

The advisory says the work is expected to be complete in November and, separately, that the park stays closed for the duration of the project. Those are two statements rather than one, and no agency has yet said when the public gets the park back.

A site used for staging generally has to be cleared and made safe before it reopens, and weather permitting carries particular weight for a river job running through the back half of hurricane season.
