Naples gas prices August 25: $3.91 regular, $5.55 diesel

Naples is paying $3.913 a gallon for regular, the second highest of Florida's twenty four metro areas, while diesel across Southwest Florida has slipped below the national average after a month above it

What it changes

Two numbers move at once here and they point in opposite directions, so it is worth separating them. Week to week, filling up in Southwest Florida is getting cheaper. Regular in the Naples metro is $3.913 a gallon, down about twelve cents in a month, and in the Fort Myers-Cape Coral metro it is $3.831, down about fifteen. Both sit below the national average of $4.097, which is the ordinary Florida position and one reason the state reads as cheap to drive in. Year on year it is a different picture, and that is the one a household budget actually feels. Regular in Naples was exactly $3.000 a year ago and is $0.913 higher now, a rise of 30.4 percent. In Fort Myers-Cape Coral it was $2.893 and is $0.938 higher, a rise of 32.4 percent. Take a driver covering 12,000 miles a year in something returning 25 miles to the gallon, which is 480 gallons. That household is spending roughly 438 dollars more on fuel in Naples than it did on the same driving a year ago, and roughly 450 dollars more in Fort Myers or Cape Coral. Nothing about the car changed. Naples pays a premium inside its own region, and it is small. The gap to Fort Myers-Cape Coral is 8.3 cents a gallon, which is about 40 dollars a year on that same 480 gallons, and Naples is 7 cents above the Florida average. What is more striking is the company Naples keeps: of the twenty four Florida metro areas AAA publishes, only West Palm Beach-Boca Raton is more expensive. Fort Myers-Cape Coral sits fourteenth of the twenty four, which is to say squarely average for the state. Diesel is where the local story has actually changed, and it has changed in the region's favour for once. A month ago diesel here was running above the national average. Today the Naples metro is at $5.549 and the Fort Myers-Cape Coral metro at $5.451, against a national average of $5.620, so both are now below it. That is not because diesel got cheaper here; the local numbers have barely moved. It is because the national average climbed more than fifteen cents in a week while Southwest Florida stood still. The relief is real but it is thin, and the year on year figure is the one that has been reshaping local prices: diesel here is roughly two dollars a gallon dearer than it was last August, a rise of about 55 percent. That number does not stay in the fuel tank. Southwest Florida runs on diesel more than most places, because roofing, concrete, landscaping, marine services, site work and the trucking of everything that arrives here all run on it, and a 55 percent increase in a trade's largest variable cost reaches a homeowner as a quoted price rather than as a pump price. If a roofing or tree quote came in higher this month than the same job last summer, this is one of the reasons, and it is not one the contractor controls. One practical note. These are metro averages published by AAA and refreshed daily, not the price at any particular station, and the spread between stations in the same city is routinely wider than the eight cents between the two metros. The averages tell you which way the market is moving. They do not tell you where to fill up.

Regular is falling week to week

Prices in both metros have eased through August. Naples regular is down from $3.998 a week ago and $4.030 a month ago, a fall of about twelve cents on the month. Fort Myers-Cape Coral is down from $3.946 a week ago and $3.980 a month ago, a fall of about fifteen cents.

The Florida statewide average is $3.843. The national average is $4.097, so both Southwest Florida metros, and the state as a whole, are cheaper than the country.

Of the twenty four Florida metro averages on the AAA page, only West Palm Beach-Boca Raton, at $4.013, is above Naples. Fort Lauderdale, at $3.905, is just below it. Fort Myers-Cape Coral ranks fourteenth of the twenty four.

Year on year the direction reverses

A year ago the Naples metro average for regular was exactly $3.000. It is $0.913 higher now, a rise of 30.4 percent.

Fort Myers-Cape Coral was $2.893 a year ago and is $0.938 higher, a rise of 32.4 percent. The national average has risen $0.936 over the same twelve months, or 29.6 percent, so the local increases are close to the national one and slightly steeper.

Diesel has crossed back under the national average

Diesel in the Naples metro is $5.549 and in Fort Myers-Cape Coral $5.451. The national diesel average is $5.620, which puts Naples about seven cents under it and Fort Myers-Cape Coral about seventeen cents under.

That is a reversal of the position this site reported on July 27, when Naples diesel stood at $5.484 and ran 19 cents above the national average.

Almost all of the movement is national rather than local. The national diesel average has risen more than fifteen cents in the past week alone, from $5.468, while the two Southwest Florida readings are within a few cents of where they were a month ago.

Measured against last August, diesel here remains far dearer. The Naples metro was $3.579 a year ago and is $1.970 higher now, a rise of 55.0 percent. Fort Myers-Cape Coral was $3.504 and is $1.947 higher, a rise of 55.6 percent.
