The Lee County Sheriff's Office says deputies arrested a man Thursday after a confrontation involving a pickaxe and a shooting on Lake Avenue in Lehigh Acres.
In an announcement published on its own website, the agency says deputies responded Monday night and found the man with a gunshot wound to his right shin. Investigators allege that another man shot him after he pushed a pickaxe into that man's back and threatened to strike him.
The agency characterizes the shooting as self-defense. That is the Sheriff's Office account, not a court finding.
The Sheriff's Office says the other man initially declined to seek charges. Detectives returned to the property after another incident Wednesday, and the agency says he then decided to seek charges over the Monday confrontation.
Deputies located the arrested man early Thursday and charged him with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, according to the announcement. The official booking record confirms a 5:37 a.m. Thursday booking and one count under that charge description.
Gulf Coast News reporters Tyler Watkins and Madison Zaleski also reported the case Thursday. The arrested man is not named here because neither the agency announcement nor the outlet report includes a response from him.
The charge and the agency's conduct account are allegations. The person arrested is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The Sheriff's Office has announced no active search, road closure or public safety order connected to the case. This brief therefore carries no Breaking flag.
