WINK News reported on Tuesday, July 28 that the sheriff's office confirmed the change on social media. The outlet added the confirmation to the top of the story it had been running since the previous day, under the line that the matter is now a homicide investigation.

The scene itself was established on Monday, July 27. Deputies were near the 4500 block of SW 22nd Street in Lehigh Acres, and Lee County deputies confirmed at about 11:45 a.m. that they were on location conducting an active death investigation. A WINK News crew was at the scene. Emily Young and Damien Alvarado reported the story for WINK News.

Beyond the reclassification, the sheriff's office has released nothing further. It has not announced an arrest. It has not named anyone, and it has not described a suspect. It has not released a cause of death, or said how many people are involved, or identified the person who died.

The agency has also made no public-safety announcement in either direction. There is no announced road closure, no area residents have been told to avoid, and no shelter instruction. Neither has the sheriff's office said there is no threat to the public, which is language it frequently uses when it considers a scene contained.
