A week after Landin Ahrens was found dead beside State Road 29, Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and the Highway Patrol says it has nothing new on the car

A week after a passing driver spotted a bicycle on the grass shoulder of State Road 29 near Immokalee, the Florida Highway Patrol still has not found the car that killed the young man lying beside it, and Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is now offering a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.

Naples Daily News reports that the reward is for up to $3,000 and that it is offered for information leading to an arrest in the crash that killed Landin Ahrens, 19.

The paper reports, from Crime Stoppers, that Ahrens was from Cape Coral and was struck and killed on August 17.

Citing a Florida Highway Patrol report, it places the crash on State Road 29 south of State Road 82 near Immokalee, with an unknown car traveling south on State Road 29 while Ahrens rode south on the paved apron. Troopers say the driver hit him and left. Ahrens was found on the grass shoulder at about 12.30 p.m. on August 17.

The Naples Daily News and the News-Press asked the Highway Patrol on Monday whether there was anything new on the vehicle. Lt. Greg Bueno, the agency's spokesman, told the paper they do not have an update.

The vehicle description is therefore unchanged from the first days of the investigation. Troopers say the car may have a damaged headlight, and that remains the only identifying detail on the public record. No vehicle has been recovered, no driver has been identified, and nobody has been arrested or accused of anything.

The reward figure is worth reading precisely. Up to $3,000 is the standing maximum Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers advertises across its appeals, and the same wording appears on the unrelated burglary, theft and robbery cases currently on its public board. The organisation has not published a case page for this crash. It is separate from the reward a family member told Gulf Coast News about last week, for which no amount was given.

On the date, the two accounts on the record differ in emphasis and neither is settled here. The Naples Daily News dates the death to August 17, which is the day Ahrens was found. Speaking to Gulf Coast News on August 19, Bueno said the crash probably happened several days earlier and that investigators were looking at Friday evening around 10 or 11 p.m., which would be August 14. The Highway Patrol has published nothing since that narrows it further.

That window is why the appeal is really an appeal for recordings. Anyone who drove State Road 29 south of the State Road 82 junction late on the Friday night, and anyone with a dashcam or a home or business camera pointed at that stretch over that weekend, holds the kind of footage that gets overwritten within a fortnight.

The Naples Daily News reports that Ahrens is one of at least 25 people to die in Collier County crashes this year.

There is no document behind this one. The Florida Highway Patrol has issued no written release on the case, and Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers has not published a case page for it on its own public board, so the reward, the agency's position and the hometown all reach the public through the newspaper and are credited to it.
