Troopers have arrested a 42 year old Immokalee man over the State Road 29 hit-and-run that killed Landin Ahrens, and say the pickup they impounded in Estero had both headlamps replaced after the crash

The Florida Highway Patrol says it has arrested a man in the hit-and-run that killed 19 year old bicyclist Landin Ahrens on State Road 29 near Immokalee, nine days after a passing driver found his body on the grass shoulder.

WINK News reports that a 42 year old Immokalee man was arrested in connection with the crash, according to the Highway Patrol. Gulf Coast News reports the same account and names the accused in full as Pedro Lopez Fernando, 42, of Immokalee, and names the victim as Ahrens.

Both outlets report, from the Highway Patrol, that Lopez Fernando faces charges of leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving death and of tampering with evidence, and that he was booked into the Collier County Jail. Troopers say the investigation remains open.

The agency's account of how it got there runs as follows. On Tuesday, troopers say, they located the suspected vehicle, a 2014 Dodge pickup truck, in a residential community in Estero. They say the physical damage to the Dodge was consistent with the hit-and-run crash, and that both headlamps had been replaced after the collision. The truck was impounded for forensic examination.

The Highway Patrol had been looking for a pickup with headlight damage since the first days of the investigation. That was the only identifying detail troopers put on the public record, and it was still the whole of the description on Monday, when the agency told the Naples Daily News it had no update on the vehicle.

The Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit also now fixes the time of the crash. Troopers say it happened at about 8.40 p.m. on August 14 on State Road 29, south of State Road 82. Ahrens was found on August 17.

That is a firmer answer than the agency has given before. Speaking to Gulf Coast News on August 19, Lt. Greg Bueno said the crash probably happened several days before the body was found and that investigators were looking at Friday evening around 10 or 11 p.m. The new figure keeps the Friday but moves it roughly two hours earlier.

Nothing about the case has been tested in court. The charges are accusations made by the Highway Patrol, no plea has been entered, and Lopez Fernando is entitled to the presumption of innocence. Every description of what happened on that road in this item is the agency's account of it.

One detail does not agree across the reporting. WINK describes Ahrens as a 19 year old bicyclist from Lehigh Acres. The Naples Daily News, reporting on Monday from Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, gave his hometown as Cape Coral. Neither outlet has corrected the other, and it is not settled here.
