Hendry County has released body camera video from the traffic stop where deputies shot Edward Young Jr. of Lehigh Acres, and the sheriff says the recording shows Young fire before a deputy returned fire

The Hendry County Sheriff's Office has released body camera video from the August 29 traffic stop where deputies shot Edward Young Jr. of Lehigh Acres.

Sheriff Steve Whidden presented the recording during a September 1 news conference. He said it shows Young draw a handgun and fire toward deputies before a deputy positioned on the passenger side returned fire.

That is the sheriff's account of what the recording shows. This publication is not making an independent finding about the use of force.

The stop began after the sheriff's office received a report of a reckless driver on State Road 29. Deputies stopped Young near Case Road. The sheriff's office says no deputy was injured. Young was taken to a hospital and died.

Fort Myers News-Press reporter Tayeba Hussein reported the video release and the sheriff's account. Gulf Coast News reporters Tyler Watkins and Madison Zaleski also carried the news conference and published the agency's recording.

The sheriff's office has not released the deputies' names. Whidden said threats against the deputies would be investigated along with the shooting.

The shooting and the resulting road closure are over. This is not an active emergency. The new development is that residents can now see the agency's visual record and hear the sheriff's explanation of it.
