CENTCOM ties its latest strikes on Iran to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz

The stated reason for Saturday's strikes names commercial shipping.

US Central Command said the strikes were designed to "further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz" and to punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces that attacked American service members in Jordan the night before. That wording was posted to social media. Gordon Lubold and colleagues at NBC News and Chandelis Duster at NPR reported it separately, and their accounts of it agree.

The written release CENTCOM published the same day frames the round differently, and the difference is worth noticing. It says the eighth consecutive night of strikes hit Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defence facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites, in order to continue degrading Iranian military capabilities, and that American assets also targeted Revolutionary Guard forces that launched the attacks in Jordan on July 17. The strait is not mentioned. The round completed at 11.30 p.m. Eastern time on July 18, at what the release calls the Commander in Chief's direction.

Two US service members died on July 17. A separate CENTCOM release says they were killed in action as American and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan, that one service member is missing in action, and that four others were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and have since been discharged. Personnel evaluated for minor injuries returned to duty. Identities are being withheld until 24 hours after the next of kin are notified. Iran's military said it had struck the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, which Jordanian and coalition forces use.

The strait itself is closed. Iran shut it and the United States military said it has reinstated a naval blockade, which is the backdrop to the shipping language in Saturday's statement. Kuwait's electricity ministry said Iran struck a power and water desalination plant twice in two days, causing a fire in part of the facility, and Kuwait's army said its air defences were confronting missile and drone attacks. Bahrain, which hosts the United States Navy's Fifth Fleet, said its air defences intercepted an Iranian attack on Sunday. The US embassy in Jordan said the airport and seaport at Aqaba had been evacuated over a specific and credible threat, though Jordanian authorities said afterwards that they had detected no threat and had ordered no evacuation.

CENTCOM puts more than 50,000 United States personnel in uniform across the Middle East.

One figure here is not from a document. NPR reported a cumulative toll of sixteen US service members killed and more than 430 wounded since the war began. Neither release carries it, and we have not matched it to a Defense Department source.
