U.S. trade deficit widened to $105.6bn as imports rose faster than exports
The U.S. goods and services deficit widened to $105.6bn in August, up $12.7bn from a revised $92.8bn in July, the Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis said Tuesday.
Imports did most of the moving.
Imports rose $17.2bn to $420.8bn, while exports rose $4.5bn to $315.2bn. The goods deficit increased $12.8bn to $136.6bn, and the services surplus increased by less than $0.1bn to $31.0bn.
The real goods deficit, measured in chained 2017 dollars, rose 8.2 percent to $114.7bn. That strips out much of the price effect.
For the first eight months of 2026, the total deficit was still $138.2bn lower than in the same period last year. Exports increased $267.7bn over that span, while imports increased $129.5bn.
