The ISM Services PMI rose 1.3 points to 55.4 in August, its 26th consecutive month in expansion territory.

Demand strengthened.

The Business Activity index increased to 61.7, its highest reading since November 2022. New Orders rose to 60.9, the highest since February 2023. Twelve industries reported growth and five reported contraction.

Employment did not follow. That index registered 47.8, below the 50 line for a second month, although it was 0.4 point higher than in July.

Prices moved the other way. The Prices index rose 2.3 points to 72.6, matching its August 2022 reading and exceeding 70 for the fifth time in six months. ISM reported graphics processing units, memory components and steel among the items in short supply.
