US employers added 29,000 jobs in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday. The unemployment rate held at 4.2 percent, with 7.1 million people unemployed.
The earlier figures weakened. July payrolls were revised from a gain of 21,000 to a loss of 10,000. August was revised from 162,000 to 133,000, removing 60,000 jobs from the two-month total.
Health care added 17,000 jobs, while construction added 11,000. Employment changed little across every major industry.
Average hourly earnings rose 0.1 percent in September and 3.0 percent over 12 months. Labour force participation held at 61.8 percent.
