The US net international investment position ended the second quarter at minus $22.42tn, down from a revised minus $21.27tn in March, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported Thursday.
That is a $1.15tn widening. US residents held $46.97tn of foreign assets, while US liabilities to foreign residents totaled $69.39tn. Price changes added $3.03tn to assets and $3.95tn to liabilities during the quarter.
The balance sheet is not the current account. That separate quarterly deficit widened $33.4bn to $246.0bn, equal to 3.0 percent of current-dollar gross domestic product. An expanded goods deficit was partly offset by smaller deficits in primary income and current transfers.
